LINUGIN® is a range of flax seed extracts (linum usitatissimum) naturally rich in phytoestrogens called lignans. These molecules belong to the polyphenols family. Lignans are the major source of phytoestrogens consumed by western countries residents, though with some differences depending on diet of individuals.
The most important of lignans is secoisolariciresorcinol diglycoside (SDG). Lignans are metabolized by the body in two different molecules that have a high estrogenic activity: enterolactone and enterodiol.
More and more studies suggest that lignans have beneficial effects on health.
With menopaused women, aside from the strong effects on hot flashes, lignans intake seems to entail an improvement on metabolic syndrome (also called metabolic syndrome X): lowering of tri glycerids, decrease of artery pressure and cardio vascular diseases but also an improvement of blood vessels elasticity (AFSSA march 2005).
Other studies point the positive effects of lignans on men, especially on prostatic hyperplasia (which affects one man out of two after 50).
The extracts from the LINUGIN® range are obtained from whole flax seeds, cold pressed to remove the oil, then transformed according to a natural food grade process that keeps the whole scope of flax seed polyphenols. These extracts are then standardized in total lignans (up to 20%) and in SDG.
